Prepare the job link, tailored resume, fit summary, and proof points an employee needs to consider a referral request.
When an employee offers to help, a tidy referral packet saves time and reduces avoidable back-and-forth. Send only what the person needs to understand the role and your fit. Never expect them to rewrite your resume, invent a recommendation, or share private company information.
Send the exact job details
Include the official posting link, job title, location, and requisition number if one is available. Confirm that the link still works and that the role matches your level and eligibility. The employee should not have to search the careers site to identify the opening.
If the employer has a referral workflow, ask whether you should apply first or wait for an internal submission. Company processes differ, and duplicate applications can make records harder to reconcile.
Attach a role-specific resume
Use a clean PDF with selectable text and a clear file name such as “Asha-Mehta-Data-Analyst.pdf.” Put relevant skills and evidence near the top. Check dates, links, spelling, and consistency with your application profile.
Tailor the resume honestly. A tool belongs on it only if you can explain how you used it. For a project, state the problem, your contribution, and the result; do not present a team achievement as your individual work.
Add a short fit summary
Write two or three sentences connecting the role’s requirements to your strongest proof. For example, mention a relevant project, internship, customer outcome, or technical skill with a concrete result. This helps the employee understand your fit without making unsupported claims on your behalf.
Include practical details the posting asks for, such as work location or availability, but avoid unnecessary personal information. Do not send identity documents, bank details, passwords, or confidential employer data.
Make every link reviewable
Share one or two links that strengthen your case: a portfolio, GitHub project, published case study, or writing sample. Check that the pages open without requiring access and that they do not expose secrets, customer data, or private repositories.
Put everything in one concise message. Ask the employee to tell you if they need a different format, then let them decide whether they are comfortable referring you. A prepared packet supports their decision; it does not create an obligation.
